The Graduate School

Characterised by a lively community of students and staff, the Graduate School promotes the ethos of the informed musician who works across practice and theory. Currently some 300 students are registered for taught postgraduate programmes, and approximately 30 students are studying for doctorates. As well as encouraging study relevant to performers and composers, the Graduate School programmes actively foster critical skills.

What programmes does the Graduate School have to offer?

In September 2010 the RCM commences a new set of postgraduate programmes. In addition to our existing well-established MMus, the College will be adding the degrees of MPerf (Master of Performance) and MComp (Master of Composition). These new Masters degrees are designed specifically for performers and composers who would previously have taken postgraduate diplomas.

The aim of the programmes is to allow flexibility and choice, and to provide an education that prepares you for the music profession. Combining a strong emphasis on Principal Study with the opportunity to take a Second Study and electives, the programmes equip you with the range of skills you will need to succeed, and a portfolio of illustrated promotional material, both web- and print-based, to support your career. You can participate in the full range of opportunities for solo, chamber, opera and orchestral performance available at the RCM, as well as a rich programme of faculty-based activities, including faculty classes and masterclasses from international artists.

Students who wish to can also specialise in one of the RCM’s recognised strengths through specialist degrees: Orchestral Performance, Historical Performance, Conducting, Accompaniment or Composition for Screen.

The RCM’s MMus continues to be available for students who have a stronger academic focus, especially those who are aiming for careers which require more extensive academic experience alongside high level performance or composition skills. It also provides a solid grounding for those aiming for further study to doctoral level.
