Case Study

Bespoke research and consultancy
Musicians' hearing and the noise of performance
The CPS and UCL Ear Institute have undertaken much recent work on noise and hearing protection with the orchestra of the Royal Opera House. We have sought to assess the impact of acoustic treatments and equipment on sound levels within the orchestra pit, particularly in relation to their impact on the players near the equipment, the overall balance of the orchestra, and the sound quality and volume as perceived from the auditorium. Tested strategies for noise management have included using a variety of sound screens and shields, rehearsing in different locations, reconfiguring the layout of the orchestra, and implementing even rotation within single sections.
We are able to provide custom advice on hearing protection and sound levels. The CPS and its partners carry the requisite equipment and expertise to deliver a range of services in this area for educational institutions and ensembles across the profession, from generating sound-level distribution maps of specified venues, pieces, and ensemble layouts to advising on hearing protection strategies.
